After decades of war and genocide Cambodia has emerged on the tourist scene in a big way. Everybody comes down to see Angkor Wat, a thousand year old temple complex, that is the largest archeological site in Asia. The town close by, Siem Riep, is now a boomtown, with hotels being build faster than that roads are being build leading to them. And looking at the type of new hotels, the tourist industry is clearly hoping for more upscale package tourists. And

why not, the town is safe and almost all of the expansive temple site has been de-mined. Massive restoration projects are underway on some of the temples as well, making this beautiful site even more accessible. Now all we can hope for is that the riches generated by the new tourist industry trickle down to the local population and that this money will entice the local government to seriously protect their national symbol.

This is where the Hollywood movie Tomb Raider was filmed.
